Shuri Castle was a 14th century or earlier palace on a plateau on Okinawa. The Japanese cons
idered it the symbol of the island. Photos show Shuri Castle before bombardment and how it looked on May 27. When the Americans took the plateau, no one had an American flag so the Marines raised a Confederate Battle flag over the site. Shuri Castle was reconstructed in 1992.
